If there are two mountains in Indonesia that are constantly compared by hikers, the answer is almost always Mount Rinjani and Mount Semeru.
Both are iconic, both are challenging, and both offer unforgettable experiences. However, after experiencing both, I realized that Rinjani and Semeru actually provide very different adventures.
If Semeru feels like a long and spiritual journey filled with reflection, Rinjani feels more like a grand adventure where the scenery changes dramatically every few hours.
So, which one is the better choice for you?
On Rinjani, every day feels like hiking a completely different mountain.
You will encounter:
Vast savannah landscapes on the Sembalun route.
Rolling hills that resemble New Zealand scenery.
Narrow ridges leading toward the summit.
The breathtaking Segara Anak Lake.
Natural hot springs.
Massive volcanic caldera cliffs.
In a single trek, you experience mountains, lakes, grasslands, and camping beside one of the most beautiful crater lakes in Southeast Asia.
Semeru, on the other hand, offers a more consistent landscape but an atmosphere that is incredibly memorable.
You will pass through:
Cool tropical forests.
Open grasslands.
The legendary Ranu Kumbolo Lake.
The famous Love Hill (Tanjakan Cinta).
Oro-Oro Ombo, which blooms with purple verbena flowers during certain seasons.
Long volcanic sand slopes leading to Mahameru Summit.
Many hikers say that Semeru is not just about reaching the summit; it is about enjoying the journey itself.
From personal experience, Semeru is more physically exhausting because of its long hiking distance.
Rinjani, however, feels more brutal during certain sections, especially during the summit push from Pelawangan to the peak. The loose volcanic sand often makes every two steps forward feel like one step backward.
That said, Semeru’s final ascent to Mahameru is also famous for its long and energy-draining volcanic sand trail.
If I had to summarize:
Semeru = a marathon.
Rinjani = a long uphill sprint.
Both mountains require proper physical preparation.
Mount Rinjani stands at approximately 3,726 meters above sea level, making it the highest mountain in Lombok and the second-highest volcano in Indonesia.
Mount Semeru reaches approximately 3,676 meters above sea level and is the highest mountain on Java Island. Semeru is also one of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes, meaning the hiking trail can close temporarily depending on volcanic activity.
Sunrise on Semeru offers stunning views of a sea of clouds with the silhouettes of East Java’s mountains such as Bromo, Arjuno, and Welirang in the distance.
Rinjani, however, offers a completely different spectacle.
From the summit, you can see:
Segara Anak Lake beneath your feet.
Mount Barujari rising from the center of the caldera.
The entire island of Lombok.
Even Bali Island on clear mornings.
Many hikers consider Rinjani’s sunrise one of the best in Southeast Asia.
Semeru is generally more budget-friendly, especially for travelers already visiting Java, as transportation access is relatively easy and affordable.
Rinjani often requires additional expenses such as:
Flights or ferry tickets to Lombok.
Transportation to the trekking basecamp.
Porter services if needed.
Official trekking packages that include guides and permits.
However, many hikers agree that the additional cost is absolutely worth the experience.
Love diverse landscapes.
Want the experience of camping beside a crater lake.
Enjoy landscape photography.
Want a complete trekking experience with many different environments.
Prefer long-distance trekking with a steady rhythm.
Want to experience Indonesia’s classic hiking culture.
Were inspired by the famous Indonesian movie 5 cm.
Enjoy quieter and more reflective journeys.
Spend at least 3 to 4 weeks preparing with running, cycling, stair climbing, or hiking.
The mountain does not care how expensive your gear is if your lungs are not ready.
Both Rinjani and Semeru feature long sections of volcanic sand that can quickly drain your energy.
Stair climbing while carrying a backpack is one of the best preparations you can do.
One of the most common mistakes among first-time hikers is carrying too much gear.
Every unnecessary kilogram becomes noticeable after several hours of hiking.
Mountain weather changes rapidly.
Starting earlier increases your chances of reaching the summit with clear skies and safer conditions.
The summit should never be more important than your safety.
If you experience symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) such as headaches, nausea, dizziness, or loss of balance, descending is always the wiser decision than pushing for the summit.
AMS can affect anyone, regardless of fitness level or hiking experience.
If you ask me which mountain is more beautiful, I would probably choose Rinjani.
But if you ask which mountain stays in your heart the longest, the answer might be Semeru.
In the end, Rinjani and Semeru are not meant to compete with each other.
They are meant to be experienced one by one.
Because once you have stood on both summits, you will realize that each mountain has its own unique way of making you want to return someday.
